Laughs shared between Ian Wright and Shaun Wright-Phillips on MOTD
TV REVIEW: Plenty of laughs were shared – including a joke about the ex-Man City star’s HEIGHT – as Shaun Wright-Phillips made Match of the Day history alongside dad Ian Wright… the father-son duo were a breath of fresh air
- Wright-Phillips was making his punditry debut on the hit BBC football show
- Gary Lineker led the jokes between the three men throughout the programme
- Their relationship blossomed as the two made subtle digs at each other
Ian Wright and son Shaun Wright-Phillips became the first father and son duo to appear as pundits on the same Match of the Day show on Saturday, with several jokes between the two shared throughout the programme.
Wright, 59, a regular on the Saturday night show alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, was joined by his son Wright-Phillips, 41,
Wright-Phillips was making his debut on the show, having recently appeared as a pundit on the likes of BT Sport and BBC Radio Five Live.
Match of the Day had confirmed the line-up earlier in the week, and those on the show wasted little time referencing the relationship between the two former Premier League players.
Lineker took the lead, posting a photo of the two on Twitter before the show began, though the men themselves initially limited their reactions to laughter.

The duo shared plenty of jokes as they analysed the six Premier League games from Saturday.
Host Gary Lineker led a lot of the jokes, making regular references to the duo’s relationship
‘Well this is lovely. A bit of @BBCMOTD history. Good luck to @swp29 and dad @IanWright0,’ Lineker posted on his social media account on Saturday evening.
When the show began, the former forward began with a cheesy line: ‘We’ve got a Wright pair in the studio, Ian and Shaun. Welcome Shaun.’
The highlights began promptly, with the first game being Leeds’ game against Newcastle in the lunchtime kick off.
Ian and Shaun then analysed the game, agreeing on many topics relating to Leeds’ relegation battle and Newcastle’s fight to finish in the Champions League places.
‘It’s lovely when father and son agree,’ joked Lineker in response. ‘It doesn’t always happen. I know from my own experiences.’
Wright and Wright-Phillips laughed, and their relationship soon blossomed following the analysis of Manchester United’s win over Wolves.
Wright, thumping his son in the chest in congratulations following his breakdown of events, joked: ‘Nice one man’, before Wright-Phillips cheekily replied: ‘Why are you hitting me for?’
The banter picked up further, with Lineker leading the conversation following Nottingham Forest’s draw at Chelsea.

The banter picked up as the show went on as the duo’s relationship blossomed on air
Lineker, after reading out that Taiwo Awoniyi was the first player to score a back-to-back brace for Forest in the top half since 1995, joked to Shaun: ‘You were in nappies and he was teaching you how to wee at that point.’
The two laughed, before Lineker informed Shaun he was actually 14 in 1995.
‘He was still pretty small though! I remember!’ joked Ian.
‘I’m actually tall right now!’ Wright-Phillips responded.
And jokes weren’t over there. Former Arsenal player Wright spent a few minutes breaking down Aston Villa’s win over Tottenham before the show was over, only for Wright-Phillips to interrupt.
‘Dad are you just saying that because it’s Spurs right?’ he asked.
‘Did you see the offsides? If you made runs like that when you were younger you’d be in serious trouble!’ Wright joked.
‘Let’s move on, we don’t want any domestics!’ Lineker quickly said in jest.
‘I can’t believe you said that!’ Wright added.
Lineker closed the show with: ‘It’s been a pleasure to have dad and son. It’s been all-Wright on the night!’
The show was generally solid and a breath of fresh air as history was made on the show
Wright-Phillips began his playing career at Manchester City before undergoing spells at Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers, New York Red Bulls and Phoenix Rising. Following his spell at Stamford Bridge, he returned to City between 2008 and 2011.
The ex-England man took a humourous swipe at his father after Arsenal’s bitter 4-1 defeat against City at the Etihad last month, tweeting: ‘Hi @IanWright0 how’s things? Just checking in… Hope you’re OK dad.’
Lineker could not resist passing the message on during Match of the Day at the time – just in case Wright himself hadn’t seen it – live on air.
There were no references to Arsenal and City’s recent rivalry on Saturday, but the show was generally good and offered a breath of fresh air with its light-hearted nature.
