Lampard speaks out on Tomori's future and rates Werner's display vs Morecambe
Frank Lampard confirmed Fikayo Tomori could leave Chelsea on loan this month after the side’s 4-0 win over Morecambe and said a potential January move was the reason the defender started on the bench at Stamford Bridge.
Birthday boy Mason Mount broke the deadlock with a superb long-range strike in the 18th minute of Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie and Timo Werner directed home Kai Havertz’s cross to double Chelsea’s lead against their League Two opposition right on half-time.
Callum Hudson-Odoi and Havertz netted at either end of the second half to secure a comfortable victory for the hosts, who will discover their fourth-round opposition in Monday night’s draw.
Tomori came on for Kurt Zouma with ten minutes remaining of the clash and it could be the last time the England centre-back pulls on a Chelsea shirt for some time, with Lampard admitting his short-term future was ‘open’ in his post-match interview.
‘The situation with Fikayo is open at the moment,’ the Chelsea head coach said.
‘There is a possibility he could be going on loan to get games somewhere else. So that would have to be the solution for him and the club. That was part of my thinking of not starting him today.
‘I gave him some minutes at the end but while we were looking at that I wanted to make sure it was the right thing for the club and for him and individually. So that’s why he didn’t start.
‘But his attitude, even though he hasn’t played much recently, has been fantastic in training and in how he is.’
Lampard said he was delighted that Werner managed to get on the scoresheet after a run of 12 games without a goal for the Blues.
‘I’m pleased for him. Strikers want to score goals,’ he added.
‘He’s had plenty of near-misses, he’s been getting in positions but it hasn’t gone in for him.
‘I was pleased for him today, it wasn’t easy because there wasn’t space in behind where they were playing quite deep. Getting confidence of scoring a goal is a positive. He gets his goal and we can move onwards.
‘We understand with Timo and Kai that they’re young lads coming into this league.
‘Some of the greatest players who have graved this league and struggled at the start. It was a nice step for both of them.’
