Lampard may have stopped himself getting Prem job after Chelsea woes

Part of the reason Frank Lampard said yes to Todd Boehly when he came calling would have been in the hope that he could succeed enough to get the Chelsea job on a permanent basis for a second time. But now the former England midfielder may have stopped himself from getting any other Premier League job in the future.

Lampard has stepped in on an interim basis and has inherited a mess. But he has also overseen the club’s worst losing run for 30 years.

The defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday was the fourth game out of four that Chelsea had lost under Lampard. Who knows if Graham Potter, or coach Bruno Saltor, would have done a better job.

Chelsea had one game under Bruno but familiar problems were there in a goalless draw at home to Liverpool. Not many people can blame Lampard for recent results.

Lampard insists Chelsea 'will be back' after Champions League exit

However, it may not get better anytime soon. Brentford are the next team to visit Stamford Bridge next Wednesday and they will possibly be the shortest odds they have ever been in an away game against the Blues.

Chelsea then play another London rival in Arsenal, who will be desperate to claim all three points at the Emirates. Matches against a rejuvenated Bournemouth and a desperate Nottingham Forest follow, before a daunting trip to the Etihad to play Manchester City.

It is a tough ask to see where Chelsea’s next three points will come. They have scored just one goal in their last six matches and also kept a clean sheet in just one of them.

Lampard’s stock as a manager at this level is already at its lowest than its ever been. He lost his last four matches at Everton before being sacked in January and has now lost all eight games he has managed in 2023.

Chelsea star Thiago Silva lays blame firmly at Todd Boehly’s feet[INTERVIEW]

If he cannot end the season on a high with Chelsea, it is difficult to see where his next job will be. Lampard started his managerial career with Derby in the Championship and almost got them promoted to the top flight.

Many believe he was given the Chelsea job too early in 2019. His legendary status at the club promoted him to a top candidate earlier than any other manager with his relative lack of experience in the dugout.

That has undoubtedly played a big part in why Boehly made the call to Lampard to return on a temporary basis. He could not turn it down as it was an opportunity to prove himself again at his beloved club.

But ultimately, these couple of months may prove to cause more harm than good for Lampard.
