Lampard makes Werner admission after penalty miss in Chelsea victory
Frank Lampard says he knows Timo Werner will "feel despondent" after missing a penalty in Chelsea's FA Cup victory over Luton.
The German forward saw his second half effort from the spot saved by Hatters goalkeeper Simon Sluga at Stamford Bridge, prolonging a dismal run in which his only goal in the last 16 appearances came in the third round of the cup at home to Morecambe.
Werner's miss didn't ultimately have any bearing on the result of the game as the Blues were already 3-1 up at the time thanks to a Tammy Abraham hat-trick, but Lampard says the moment summed up the Germany international's current woes in front of goal.
“I’m disappointed for him as Timo gave a lot with his performance today," said Lampard as Chelsea headed through to a fifth round trip to Barnsley.
"He was a threat behind, his link up with Tammy, his link up with people around him, it’s (the penalty miss) just one of those things.
“When it’s not going for you, it can happen. I missed penalties, I know the feeling. I know he will feel despondent, maybe now and the last few minutes of the game, but he shouldn’t be.
"It’s my job and his teammates’ job to lift him and he will be fine.
“It was almost a sign of what’s going on for Timo at the minute, it’s not quite dropping for him. But there will be a time when he takes penalties without thinking about it and hits the back of the net without thinking about it.
"At the moment that’s not quite the time for Timo, but it will come and hopefully soon."
