Lampard frustrated by Chelsea in Real Madrid loss with warning sent

Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard admitted his frustration with his team as they were eliminated by Real Madrid in their 2-0 Champions League loss on Tuesday. It was an improved Blues performance but they faced familiar problems as they were unable to find the back of the net despite carving out several opportunities, before Rodrygo scored twice to ensure that Carlo Ancelotti’s outfit advanced to the semi-finals.

Lampard claimed he was pleased with his side’s performance despite the defeat, as he was able to take the most positives from this game during his short second stint at the club.

Big chances fell to the likes of N’Golo Kante and Marc Cucurella, as a defensive shape led Lampard to line up with five defenders, four midfielders and just Kai Havertz up front as they chased a two-goal disadvantage from the first leg.

Lampard bemoaned Chelsea’s inability to score as they have just one goal in his four games back at the helm – Conor Gallagher’s deflected effort in the 2-1 defeat by Brighton on Saturday – but insisted that the performance level will not drop despite the Blues having little to play for in the remainder of the season.

“We played really well for 60 minutes,” Lampard told BT Sport. “Really good chances, but you have to take them at this level. It wasn’t our night. You’re playing for Chelsea. I won’t let anyone off the hook for [now] seeing the season out. That standard [from tonight from the first 60 minutes] cannot drop.

“You don’t want to praise the performance too much when you lose at this level but we were much improved. This club has been further in this competition and the players can take this feeling forward with them for the future.

“It’s not for the want for trying [not being able to score in recent games]. You’re playing for Chelsea. So regardless, every game you play you have to give everything.”

Chelsea are now out of all cup competitions following earlier exits in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, while they currently sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table in a dismal season for the Blues.

It is unlikely that Chelsea under their new head coach for next season will be playing in Europe as they are 10 points off seventh-placed Brighton and face an uphill battle just to qualify for the UEFA Conference League.
