LaLiga star Luis Suarez has been left red-faced after he was accused of striking the ‘worst penalty ever’ during Granada’s 1-1 draw against bottom of the league Getafe on Thursday night.

The Colombian, 23, put the ball on the spot in the 77th minute for the Nazaries as they looked to avoid an embarrassing defeat to winless Getafe.

Having gone 1-0 down to an Enes Unal goal – formerly of Manchester City – there was no easier chance for the Andalusian side to equalise.

But Suarez skied his chance miserably as he put his effort into Row Z – before comically turning around to blame the penalty spot for being scuffed.

Fans of the southern side looked on in horror at what had just happened in front of their eyes.

His spot-kick provoked reaction from journalists and fans across the continent, with many making rugby jokes as to how high it went.

Independent journalist @MiguelDelaney joked: “Granada’s Luis Suarez has just secured the Lions series.”

Others poked fun at Suarez’s attempt with more jokes about flying objects.

@AtTheBridgePod tweeted: “So that’s where that ball that just landed in my garden came from.”

One viewer claimed Bruno Fernandes’ penalty against Aston Villa was almost just as bad.

@gazzatoddy28 added: “I heard it collided in space with the one from Bruno Fernandes the other week.”

Another Twitter user agreed. @TaintlessRed said: “It’s difficult to even kick a stationary ball at that steep of an angle even if you try. Impressive miss.”

Luckily for Suarez, his blushes were spared as Granada grabbed a last-gasp equaliser in the 97th minute.

39-year-old Jorge Molina got on the scoresheet against the side he used to play for to secure a point and lift Granada out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

The result leaves Getafe rooted to the bottom of the table on just three points.
