Kylian Mbappe has sent a clear message to Lionel Messi that he wouldn’t be in favour of the Argentine parading the World Cup trophy at Paris Saint-Germain. Argentina won their first World Cup trophy since 1986 earlier this month as they overcame France in the final following a penalty shootout.

Mbappe produced one of the finest World Cup final performances in history as he bagged a hat-trick and then held his nerve to dispatch his spot-kick in the shootout. But the 24-year-old wasn’t able to get his hands on the coveted trophy for the second consecutive time. There have been suggestions that Messi could exhibit the trophy at the Parc des Princes when he returns to France. But Mbappe appears to have ruled that out.

“I’ll never digest it,” the blockbuster striker said. “But like I told my coach and team-mates, there’s no reason that my club should pay for a defeat with my national team, it’s two different situations.

“The message was simple – it was to show that, whatever goes on with the national team, PSG is a separate thing and I’m still determined to bring every trophy to the capital.”

According to GOAL, Messi asked PSG if he could hold the trophy in front of their fans. But the French giants are reluctant to grant his wish as he won the World Cup at the expense of France.

Mbappe was back in club action on Wednesday night and scored a late winner from the penalty spot as PSG defeated Strasbourg 2-1. And following the match, the forward paid tribute to Messi.

“I spoke with him after the game to congratulate him because, this is the quest of a lifetime for him,” Mbappe said. “For me too, but I failed. You always have to be a good player. And celebrations are not my problem. I don’t waste my energy on such trivial things. The most important thing for me is to give the best of myself for my club. We’ll wait for Leo to come back to win games and score goals.”

Mbappe has enjoyed an imperious campaign this time around and has already bagged 20 goals and five assists for PSG. His 13 goals in Ligue 1 have helped his side build an eight-point lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table. And his seven Champions League goals ensured PSG cemented a last 16 showdown with Bayern Munich next year.
