Kylian Mbappe has 'every right' to run PSG deal down says Fifpro head

Kylian Mbappe has ‘every right’ to let his PSG contract run down this season, says the head of players’ union Fifpro as he criticises the French club for ‘pressuring’ him to leave this summer

  • Paris Saint-Germain are attempting to force a summer sale for the superstar
  • Mbappe has refused to extend his deal with the Parisians that has one-year left

Paris Saint-Germain have been slammed by the head of international players’ union Fifpro for their treatment of Kylian Mbappe as they attempt to force the Frenchman out the exit door.

Mbappe is regarded as one of the best players in the world and has been told by PSG that he must leave the club this summer as they look to avoid losing their most valuable star for free at the end of his contract.

The France World Cup winner stunningly signed a new three-year deal at the Ligue 1 champions in May last year despite Real Madrid bidding for his services as he committed his future in the French capital.

It was later revealed that Mbappe’s mega-money contract could leave his deal a year early as the option of an extra year was at his discretion with the striker then telling the club in June that he won’t be activating that option.

The Parisians have since attempted to negotiate an early departure for their star in a bid to recoup some of his huge transfer value with Saudi side Al-Hilal submitting an astonishing £259m offer.

The 24-year-old superstar is expected to reject the riches being offered to him in the Middle East with PSG fearing their player has already agreed to join Real Madrid, and Fifpro general secretary, Jonas Baer-Hoffmann is unhappy with how Mbappe is being treated.

‘He has every right to honour and play out the remainder of his contract and then take a decision on who he wants to play and work for,’ Baer-Hoffmann told The Times.

‘This is the essence of the Bosman ruling and the freedom won by players — establishing free agency at the end of the contract.

‘Many players are often criticised by clubs and fans for wanting to leave their club during a contract, pushing for a transfer. Now a top player actually honours his commitment and he gets pressured for it,’ he added.

‘To suggest that his actions would be unfair or disrespectful to the club is just wrong.

‘Both sides — PSG and Kylian Mbappé — agreed to this two-year extension. Both sides knew that they would find themselves in this position within months of signing the contract.

‘Kylian Mbappé has said that he is committed to fulfil his contract, has played hard and very well since then,’ he said.

The situation is complex with Mbappe justified in wanting to see out the remainder of the contract that was agreed with PSG, although it appears the club are annoyed they will miss out on a huge transfer settlement if they let his contract run down and he leaves for free.

Scoring an outstanding hattrick in last year’s World Cup final against Argentina only increased Mbappe’s price tag further and PSG have excluded him from their pre-season tour in a bid to force a sale.

The contract stand-off has threatened to turn ugly with Mbappe reportedly prepared to sit out the entirety of next season while his contract runs down.
