Klopp: We WANT to be a pain in Man City's backside

‘We’ll try to be as annoying as possible’: Jurgen Klopp vows to be a pain in the a*** for Pep Guardiola as Liverpool try and hunt down Man City in the title race

Jurgen Klopp admits a chance for Liverpool to catch Manchester City may not arrive this season. Instead all they can do is hope and remain a ‘pain in the a***’ of Pep Guardiola’s side.

City’s defeat by Tottenham means Liverpool are six points behind the Premier League leaders before Wednesday’s game in hand against Leeds.

And Klopp on Tuesday insisted his side have no room for error in the title race. ‘We have to win all our games,’ he said. ‘We expect City to win theirs.

Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool may not get the chance to catch Manchester City this season

‘It happens more often than not, that they pretty much win all their games.’

Liverpool’s fate is in their hands, given they face City in April. But Klopp maintains that their best hope is to ‘annoy’ City by staying in touch for as long as possible.

‘For us it’s important that we are close to the top — whoever is at the top — because that obviously shows something is going in the right direction,’ the German said.

‘It’s been going on a while that both teams are able to do some special stuff. We are pushing each other and not only us — don’t forget the other teams: Chelsea, United, Arsenal, Tottenham. There is no chance to get soft because another team will catch you.

Man City’s loss to Tottenham has opened the door for Liverpool to close the gap to three points

Having played a game less, City’s loss to Tottenham has presented Liverpool an opportunity

‘Pep said we are the pain in the lower back (Guardiola recently branded Liverpool a ‘pain in the a***’).

‘That’s a good description. And that’s how it should be. We try to be as annoying as possible until we have a chance to overtake.

‘In the decisive moments of the season you have to be close enough. We have to be at our absolute best.’

That will be trickier without injured pair Roberto Firmino (muscle) and Diogo Jota (ankle), both of whom will miss Wednesday’s game.

They could also miss Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

‘We will see,’ Klopp said. ‘They are pushing but they were not on the pitch for training, which is not a good sign.’

Before heading to Wembley, Liverpool must come through ‘a big fight’ against Leeds at Anfield.

As well as the clash against City, Klopp’s side have to play West Ham, Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham in their final 13 league matches.

‘It’s not that we sit here and count these points waiting for the City game,’ Klopp added.

‘What the boys did over the past four years is pretty special and I’m happy with that but not so happy that I think, “OK, that’s enough”. We have to go from now on.

‘The decisions will be made later — one at the weekend and other decisions maybe even later. We just have to make sure we’re around when these decisions will be made.’
