Klopp says Liverpool’s transfer plans like ‘kid asking for Ferrari at Christmas’

Jurgen Klopp has gone full Grinch after promising to steal 'Christmas' from Liverpool's transfer-hungry supporters this summer.

Well, sort of. He likened the club's pursuit of Jude Bellingham to a five-year-old child expecting to find a Ferrari under the tree on Christmas morning – suggesting that what awaits is a disappointingly-frugal transfer window, rather than the splurge fans are craving.

It comes following news the Reds have pulled out of the race to sign the prodigiously-talented Dortmund midfielder, despite being favourites to land him for the best part of a year, after baulking at the asking price – believed to be well north of £100m.

"We cannot have six players in a summer, everyone for £100m," Klopp said. "We are not children; when you ask a five-year-old what they want for Christmas and they say a Ferrari, you wouldn't say 'oh, that's a good idea'.

"You would say 'no, that is too expensive and anyway, you cannot drive it'. If this kid is then unhappy their whole life because he cannot get a Ferrari, it would be a really sad life."

Liverpool still plan to reinforce their creaking midfield in the coming months, but will have to source cheaper alternatives to Bellingham in order to plug all the gaps – and there are plenty of them.

Chelsea's Mason Mount remains a target and could be snapped up for a cut-price since his contract expires at the end of next season, while the likes of Conor Gallagher, Matheus Nunes, Alexis Mac Allister and Youri Tielemans are also being monitored.

"You look what you can do, and you work with that," Klopp added. "What we need and what we want, we try absolutely everything to get it, but there are moments when you have to accept that this or that is not possible for us – you step aside and do different stuff."

Whomever he signs, given Liverpool's recent decay, we bet Jurgen's heart will grow three sizes that day.
