Klopp says he is NOT surprised by spending power of PL rivals
‘We can’t sign players with money we don’t have’: Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool are being left behind by ‘no limits’ Chelsea, Man United and City in the transfer market… but tells fans to be HAPPY despite not signing a midfielder
- Liverpool have made just one major signing this summer in Ibrahima Konate
- Meanwhile, Man Utd signed Jadon Sancho while Man City bought Jack Grealish
- Chelsea paid £98m to re-sign Romelu Lukaku – yet the Reds have not spent big
- Jurgen Klopp defended the lack of a new midfielder after Gini Wijnaldum left
- He said the Reds work to different rules in the market due to their finances
Jurgen Klopp insists he is not surprised by the spending power of Manchester City, Man Utd and Chelsea this summer, insisting Liverpool can only ‘spend the money we earn.’
The Reds boss was speaking ahead of the start of the Premier League season, with his team facing newly-promoted Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday evening.
But, after Man Utd and City spent at least £100m this summer, with Chelsea on an outlay of £98m too and with Liverpool only having brought in defender Ibrahima Konate, Klopp admitted he was not surprised by the spending power of rivals as ‘we all know their situations.’

Manchester United spent £73m on Jadon Sancho while City bought Jack Grealish for £100m
‘We are allowed to spend the money we earn,’ he said. ‘That’s what we always did. We spent before we earned on Konate and that is what we did. I am never surprised by the financial power of City, Chelsea, United.’
United spent £73m on Jadon Sancho and are set to bring in Raphael Varane, while City spent an English-record £100m fee on Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish.
Chelsea also recently bought big, spending £98m to re-sign forward Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, while the Reds have not signed a new midfielder despite Georginio Wijnaldum leaving the club at the end of last season.
Asked if he was surprised by their spending power, Klopp said: ‘No, because these clubs don’t depend on these kind of things.

Defender Ibrahima Konate (L) is Klopp’s only major signing so far in this transfer window
‘We all know the situation of Chelsea, City and PSG. We have our way to do it. We are allowed to spend the money we earn. That’s what we always did.
‘When the pandemic started we all hoped it would be over in a month. It was for everybody. I am not surprised [on spending].
‘Maybe this summer is not the most exciting, but maybe if you are a real Liverpool fan you are happy with the news the club delivered last few weeks. Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Virgil – others will follow. That is great news.
‘The summer is always the same; people think that if you don’t sign then you don’t work. That’s not the case.
Klopp has opted not to bring in another midfielder so far despite Gini Wijnaldum’s departure
Virgil van Dijk has however committed his future to Liverpool by signing a contract extension
‘If other teams wanted to sign these players it would cost a lot of money but we have them already. Let’s see what we can build on this season and then we go from there. A good start is important but we won’t stop if we don’t start well.’
He later went on to say: ‘We cannot compare to other clubs because obviously they have no limits. We have limits.
‘But we have been successful in this way in the last few years. Let’s see which is the right way. We can’t spend money we don’t have – maybe others can.’
