Klopp plays down Liverpool's hopes of catching Man City in title race

‘I didn’t think one second about a title race’: Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool must win EVERY game to stand any chance of catching City… as he reveals he thought rivals WON their clash with Spurs

  • Jurgen Klopp has revealed his surprise at Manchester City losing to Tottenham
  • He assumed City had won when his driver informed him the score was 3-2 late on
  • Despite that upset, Klopp is playing down Liverpool’s hopes in the title race
  • He believes his side must win all of their remaining games to win the league title

Jurgen Klopp believes his Liverpool side need to win every single Premier League game left on their schedule to have any hope of catching Manchester City in the title race.

Liverpool, who have a game in hand over City this week when they play Leeds, saw the gap reduced to six points after Pep Guardiola’s side were dramatically beaten 3-2 at home to Tottenham.

Klopp revealed he chose not to ‘follow’ how the match unfolded and assumed it was City who had won the game when he was told there had been a late winning goal.

Man City’s defeat to Chelsea has opened the door for Liverpool to close the gap to three points

‘I was on the way home when it was 2-1 Tottenham, then I arrived at home and didn’t follow it anymore as I was sure they would equaliser anyway,’ Klopp said.

‘Then the driver was very excited and told me it was 2-2 and then 3-2. When he said 3-2, I thought City had won so I said “OK” but he said “no, Tottenham won 3-2”. I said “Oh” that was my reaction.

‘For us nothing changed because we have to win all our games.’

Asked if City’s defeat to Tottenham has shown a weakness others can exploit, a dismissive Klopp thinks Guardiola’s side can go and win every one of their remaining games.

‘We expect that,’ he said of City winning all of their games. ‘Historically it happens more often than not.

‘We play them once, that’s one we definitely want to win. This game [Leeds], nothing has changed.

Season at a glance

‘We cannot win everything in just one game, we just try to win a very difficult Premier League game. We saw all the faces of Leeds on Sunday.’

Liverpool have 13 Premier League matches left on their schedule and know a win over Leeds at Anfield this week can ramp up the pressure on City, closing the gap to three points.

The Reds, who swept Norwich City aside 3-1 at the weekend, will be heavy favourites to turn Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds over but Klopp does not share that same over-confidence.

While Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino remain sidelined, Klopp has warned his title-chasing players that underestimating Leeds could bring real consequences.

‘If we are not ready for the game, they will eat you,’ he added.

‘Leeds man mark all over the pitch. They are leading in 3 decisive running statistics.’

Liverpool face a defining period in mid-March when they face Arsenal away (March 16), Manchester United at home (March 20) and Manchester City away (April 9) in a four-game stretch which also includes Watford.
