Klopp fires warning to Liverpool players ahead of Man City despite Porto mauling
Jurgen Klopp watched his Liverpool side hammer Porto 5-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday night but has warned his players that they will have to play even better against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
It was a fantastic night for the Reds in Portugal with Mohamed Salah scoring twice, Sadio Mane netting and Roberto Firmino coming off the bench to net twice himself.
In contrast, Manchester City suffered a 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain as Lionel Messi netted for the first time for the Parisians in stunning style.
Klopp’s side might have more confidence heading to Anfield, but he knows it is going to be an extremely difficult afternoon against the Premier League champions and he reckons that their performance in Porto would not be enough against City.
Asked whether their momentum will help going into the weekend, Klopp told BT Sport: ‘Yeah it always helps but against City it doesn’t help a load.
‘We need much more things than only momentum, we need to play better than we did tonight, that’s clear. It will be a completley different game.
‘I only heard the result from the PSG vs City game so City will and want to strike back, for sure.
‘But we are at home finally after a few games without our crowd, so let’s give it a go.’
Guardiola seemed relaxed after his side’s defeat in Paris, saying that they will enjoy a glass of wine tonight before beginning preparation for a clash with the Reds.
‘Good performance,’ he said. ‘We did everything except score. They defended deep and were dangerous with counter-attack. My biggest compliment for the team.
‘We’re going to eat good tonight, drink a glass of wine, recover and prepare for the Liverpool game.’
