Van Dijk has only just returned to action after missing most of last season due to a knee injury sustained against Everton back in October.

The 30-year-old reassured fans after the game that he was feeling fine, and Klopp was able to confirm as much on Thursday.

But he admitted he was initially as concerned as the Liverpool supporters and sought immediate confirmation from Van Dijk that all was well.

‘With Virgil, that was obviously a scary moment, you can imagine,’ Klopp told Liverpool’s official website.

Van Dijk reassured fans after the game that the he was feeling OK and the pain had gone

‘I sent him a message after the game, “Are you alright?” “Yes.” “100 per cent?” “200 per cent.” “Come on, send me a video of you without limping…” “I’m only limping off.”

‘So he called me from the bus and said, “Boss, I’m fine!” I said, “Why are you limping then?” He said, “My wife asked the same!” So, yeah, that was a bit of a tricky moment but apart from that, no, all fine (for the other international players).’

Klopp also gave fitness updates on several other players including Takumi Minamino, Roberto Firmino and James Milner, all of whom are injured.

‘Taki is already here for a while, he got injured obviously with Japan,’ he said.

‘Bobby is not (fit), it happened in the game (against Chelsea) obviously.

Naby Keita is back in Liverpool having left Guinea in the midst of a military coup in the country

‘Millie (Milner), we have to see. Millie has to be part of team training yet, he was not part of team training so far, so we will see what he can do today. But he will get closer definitely.’

Klopp also said Harvey Elliott was ‘fine again’ after withdrawing from England Under-21 duty because of fitness issues, and that Naby Keita was safely back in Liverpool having left Guinea despite the country being in the midst of a military coup.

‘Naby is fine,’ said Klopp. ‘Yesterday he was not here (at training) but he was in Liverpool again.

‘I will have a chat with him today, but from what I know from all the calls and talks we had, he’s fine.’
