Klopp admits Liverpool are lagging behind rivals Manchester City

‘You have the best team in the world and you put in the best striker on the market’: Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool are lagging behind rivals Man City as ‘it isn’t possible to act like them’ – pointing to Erling Haaland’s £850,000-a-week wages

  • Liverpool host bitter rivals Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday
  • City sit 13 points ahead of Liverpool going into the exciting clash at Anfield
  • In-form striker Erling Haaland has scored 15 goals in nine games for them to date
  • Liverpool summer signing Darwin Nunez is yet to reach Haaland’s heights yet

Jurgen Klopp has admitted Liverpool cannot compete with Manchester City and believes the signing of Erling Haaland has moved the champions into a different orbit.

Liverpool matched City stride for stride in the four seasons before this one, taking 357 points in 152 games to City’s 358. But on Sunday they face each other with City 13 points ahead and Haaland having scored 15 goals in nine games. The striker is on £850,000-a-week after signing from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth up to £85million.

Liverpool made a big investment of their own in Darwin Nunez during the summer, but he is a work in progress and Klopp spelt out why his club have to pick and choose their transfer targets carefully.

Asked how Liverpool could keep pace with City, Klopp said: ‘You will not like the answer. Nobody can compete with City in that. You have the best team in the world and you put in the best striker on the market. No matter what it costs, you just do it. I know City will not like it. Nobody will like it. You have asked the question but you know the answer.

‘What do Liverpool do? We cannot act like them. It is not possible. There are three clubs in world football who can do what they want financially. It’s legal and everything is fine.

‘We have to look at it (and say), “We have to make it younger, and here a prospect and here a talent” – and that is what you have to do. And you (try to) compete.

‘I heard that at Newcastle (sporting director Dan Ashworth) said, “There is no ceiling for this club”. He is right! He is absolutely right. There is no ceiling for Newcastle. Congratulations! But some other clubs have ceilings.’
