Kieran Trippier’s mammoth proposed salary at Newcastle is sign of things to come

Kieran Trippier is set to be the first signing of the PIF era at Newcastle and his mouthwatering salary is a stark reminder of the wealth in which the club now possesses.

The wingback will make £7.5 million per year if his move to the northwest is completed, meaning his salary is worth double that of the club’s highest earner, who's reported to be, via Spotac, Joelinton.

The Brazilian is currently contracted at £80,000-a-week, but Trippier will make £144k-a-week if his reported move to Newcastle is finalised.

The 31-year-old is edging closer to a return to the Premier League return after a good spell at Atletico Madrid and he appeared to give their fans a farewell after the club’s 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Newcastle have targeted Trippier ever since they were taken over by PIF and his transfer, if sealed, will reflect a club who are able to sell a bright future to prospective players despite their perilous league position.

There have been some conflicting reports over the size of the transfer fee but the general consensus is that there will be some £12million given to the La Liga champions right away and then add-ons, such as relegation clauses, will rise the amount to around the £25m-£30m mark.

Atleti manager Diego Simeone said that he hoped Trippier will but the decision is down to him.

"We want him to stay, but you can’t force anyone to stay. An extraordinary player,” Simeone said after the Rayo Vallecano win at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Can Newcastle survive the drop this season? Let us know in the comments section.

“He is an extraordinary footballer that has given us a lot. But as I have said, it depends on him. We hope that Trippier can stay but I don’t know if you can’t hold anyone back in life.”

Trippier made 83 appearances for Atletico after signing from Tottenham in 2019 and is thought to be keen on a return to his home country.

Currently, the Magpies just have Emil Krafth, Javier Manquillo and Jacob Murphy, who was bought as a winger, as options in the right fullback position. The club, who sit 19th in the table, have the joint-worse defensive record in the league, conceding, 42 goals in 19 games, and have only won a single game this season
