Wales striker Kieffer Moore has been made to look silly after England knocked the Dragons out of the World Cup. The Bournemouth star said ahead of the tournament that he ‘couldn’t wait’ to send the Three Lions back home but was on the receiving end as Gareth Southgate’s men cruised to a 3-0 win in the crunch Battle of Britain clash.
Wales had high hopes going into the tournament but failed to impress on the world stage. A creditable draw with the USA was shortly followed by an injury-time defeat to Iran leaving them with a mountain to climb against England. They needed to beat their fellow Brits by a four-goal margin to go through to the next round but it wasn’t to be as they slumped to a disappointing 3-0 defeat.
Moore had been one of the team’s stars most bullish about their chances in Qatar ahead of the tournament as he set his sights on knocking out the country of his birth. The 30-year-old was born in Torquay but has represented Wales since making his debut in 2019. He represented England’s C team while at Forest Green Rovers in 2016 but qualified for the Dragons as a result of his grandfather from Llanrug in North Wales.
His comments have now come back to bite him following Wales’ exit given it was England who sent him home and not the other way around.

Before his first game, Moore claimed he “couldn’t wait” to put England in an interview with the BBC. He also suggested that “it would be amazing” to end his birth country’s hopes before adding: “There will be no mixed loyalties. I can’t remember much [about being capped by England C]. It was Estonia maybe and I think I came on towards the end of the game.”
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was also called out ahead of the tournament. Moore found the net for Bournemouth in their 3-0 win over the 28-year-old’s club side Everton in their final game before the World Cup break and stated: “It is nice to get one up already.”
Moore’s comments now do not seem the brightest given he will now be returning to the south coast following England’s win. In contrast, Gareth Southgate’s men can look forward to a round-of-16 clash against Senegal this Sunday as the Three Lions try to win the World Cup for the first time in 56 years.
