Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas has opened up about how his failed move to Manchester United resulted in one of the ‘worst days’ of his life. Navas looked set for a Premier League switch in 2015 as part of David de Gea’s Real Madrid transfer.

The Costa Rica international was then in line to succeed Iker Casillas between the sticks at Real.

However, the La Liga giants were determined to lure De Gea back to his home nation when he was arguably the best goalkeeper in world football.

De Gea looked destined to secure a dream move to the Bernabeu on transfer deadline day in a deal that involved Navas joining United in return.

The swap deal controversially fell through in the 11th hour after problems with United’s fax machine, and both players were left in disarray.

Recently addressing the incident, Navas revealed he was waiting at an airport and was forced to tears when he learned his Old Trafford arrival was off the cards.

“This was one of the worst days of my life,” Navas explained.

“I didn’t cry that day, but I did after all was said and done when I was with my wife.

“I was waiting in the airport even without suitcases. I was not on the plane, but I was near.

“In the end, after everything that happened, many complicated moments, we’re human and eventually the time comes when you burst.”

Navas was undoubtedly treated woefully while acting as a makeweight for the De Gea deal, but the outcome was alright for both Real and him.

The 34-year-old represented Los Blancos for another four seasons, winning one La Liga title and three consecutive Champions Leagues.

He joined PSG in 2019, where he remains their number one keeper, although his position may be under threat by the impending arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer.

In Navas’ agreed contract with United, it was stipulated that he’d be Louis van Gaal’s first-choice option, but De Gea continued to thrive with the number one shirt.

The Spaniard remained at Old Trafford to this day, winning the FA Cup under Van Gaal and the League Cup and Europa League under Jose Mourinho.

De Gea may finally be heading for the exit door this summer, though, with Dean Henderson expected to take over as first-choice stopper next season.

United are reportedly closing in on their first signing of the summer, Tom Heaton, who may act as a replacement for the Red Devils legend.
