Roy Keane believes Manchester United need ‘four or five’ additions this summer to challenge for the Premier League title as the former Red Devils captain said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is ‘nowhere near good enough’ to topple Man City.

United have built on their third-place finish last campaign and look certain to end the 2020-21 season as runners-up to Pep Guardiola’s City, who have stormed to the league title.

Solskjaer’s side have benefitted from the impact of free signing Edinson Cavani, who has flourished since joining from PSG last summer.

The Uruguayan, 34, has scored 15 goals in 36 games for the club and committed his future to United this week, signing a contract extension to the delight of supporters.

However, Keane believes that United need more additions in attacking positions and remain some way off their local rivals if they are to win their first league title since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

‘I think it was always going to happen,’ the Irishman said of Cavani’s new contract on Sky Sports. ‘He has obviously done very well for the club.

‘I worry about the bigger picture, that they might think that will be enough in terms of the attacking players for next season.

‘But I still think Man United need to go out and buy big if they want to go back to winning league titles because the group of players they have at the moment are nowhere near good enough to win a league title.’

The former United captain outlined that Solskjaer needs a strong squad at his disposal to navigate a title-winning campaign. The Norwegian made 10 changes for the defeat by Leicester on Tuesday, with the replacements described as ‘not strong enough’ by Keane.

‘You need a big squad of players, we have seen the best squad with Man City they’re competing, you need a big squad,’ he added.

However, Keane believes that United’s squad is ‘not good enough’ to topple Man City

The Irishman said Tuesday’s defeat by Leicester underlined United’s lack of squad depth

‘Manchester United’s squad is not strong enough, we saw that the other night against Leicester. If any time you needed proof, that was it. The back up players weren’t good enough.

‘Ole mentioned it after the game they need some players. I mentioned a few weeks ago they need one or two, they probably need four or five players to compete with Man City.’

Keane’s comments follow on from former team-mate Gary Neville, who on Monday opined that United would not move for another striker this summer after Cavani’s new deal was signed.

The Red Devils have been linked with mega-money moves for Spurs’ Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
