Kane: Top finish not enough for Spurs after Champions League exit
Harry Kane insists settling for a top finish is ‘NOT enough’ for Tottenham after their Champions League exit against AC Milan and admits their FA Cup loss to Sheffield United was a ‘dagger in our hearts’ that the team ‘haven’t recovered from’

- The forward said securing a top four spot was not enough for the club
- The England star claimed the team are ‘lacking something’ to be successful
Harry Kane insisted that settling for finishing in the top four is not enough for a club like Tottenham after they were knocked out by AC Milan in the Champions League.
‘Where we’re at as a club, we should be winning trophies. That’s always the aim. The top four [being our only target] is a consequence of not playing as well as we want to play,’ said the Spurs captain.
‘Now that’s all we can fight for [top four] so that’s going to be the goal and hopefully we can achieve that. But for sure, it’s not enough for this club.’
Spurs were booed off at half-time and full time and their wait for a trophy since 2008 will go on into next season. And Kane admitted that he understood the frustrations of the supporters.
‘They have the right to voice their opinion. The last week especially just hasn’t been good enough,’ said Kane. ‘Before the Sheffield United game, the season could have been a whole lot different.

Tottenham delivered a flat display against AC Milan in the last-16 as they were dumped out of the Champions League to prolong their 15-year trophy drought
‘You go through there, you take that momentum into the league game (at Wolves) and this game. But I feel like that loss last week put a dagger in our hearts and we haven’t really recovered from that.’
Spurs were eliminated from their second competition in a week after defeat to Sheffield United in the FA Cup and Antonio Conte’s side were flat against a well-organised Milan outfit. The home side rarely threatened and were guilty of sitting back and showing little urgency until the latter stages.
‘It’s been a really tough week. We’ve lacked quality in key moments against teams that we’ve had good opportunities against. Not just opportunities where you’re one-on-one with the keeper but opportunities where you’re in a good position on the pitch.
‘We need more from all of us – to be more direct, more clinical,’ added Kane. ‘The last three games we haven’t scored a goal and that’s not good enough.’

With Conte’s contract set to expire at the end of the season and no indication yet that he intends to stay in North London, Kane admitted that Spurs lacked the mentality to compete with the best teams in Europe.
The England captain and Spurs record goalscorer turns 30 this year and the rumours that he will move on will only grow if Spurs fail to reach the Champions League next season.
‘That’s his (Conte’s) decision, he’s going to be the one that makes that choice (to stay or not). All we can do as players is try to perform for him and work as hard as we can. That’s what we’re doing. We’re trying but we’re just lacking something,’ added Kane.
‘We’ve talked about mentality before and that ruthless hunger to be better, to be one of the best teams in Europe. We haven’t quite found that yet.’
