Kane could face extended spell on sidelines after ankle injury against Liverpool
Harry Kane could face a race against time to be fit for England’s World Cup qualifiers in March.
England captain Kane is anxiously waiting for a scan to discover the extent of another ankle injury with Jose Mourinho left with a mounting casualty list at Tottenham.
Tottenham boss Mourinho said the lay-off is likely to be “weeks” and the injury has been too swollen to get an accurate report on the damage suffered in the defeat to Liverpool.
But Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate now faces a nervous wait as England face three crunch qualifiers in March, starting with San Marino on the 25th, Albania three days later and then Poland on the 31st.
Kane missed a big chunk of last season with a serious hamstring problem while he has been plagued by ankle issues in recent seasons and the club are hoping it will not be another long lay-off.
However, the worry will be Tottenham’s congested fixture list but also getting fit and back to match sharpness for the England games amid other injuries for Spurs.
Mourinho confirmed that left back Sergio Reguilon is likely to be out for up to a month after he damaged his hamstring in training this week.
Giovani Lo Celso is also missing as his hamstring problem is proving to be a major issue and there is no set date on his return but they are potentially looking at another month.
That could have a major impact on Dele Alli’s chances of a loan move before the end of the transfer window with Paris Saint Germain keen to get him this month.
Mourinho insists that Alli is injured anyway but the England midfielder wants game time to stake his claim for the Euros this summer with PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino keen to link up with him again.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is also not keen on a loan move for Alli despite him falling out of favour under Mourinho and would rather wait to do a permanent transfer in the summer.
But blocking the loan move now would have major consequences for Alli because it would end any chance of him getting an England recall.
Mourinho has insisted that Tottenham will be able to cope without Kane as last season it was far worse because other attacking players were also out and claimed it could be a chance for Gareth Bale.
Mourinho said: “It is a crucial moment for him he is feeling better and better and of course when you lose a player of Harry's quality and dimension the other guys have to step up and hopefully he can help us.
“Harry Kane is Harry Kane. There are players in some teams that are not replaceable but one thing is to have, like last season, three or four attacking players out injured at the same time.
“But another thing is to have Harry Kane out because of course we have Vinicius, Bergwijn, Lucas, Lamela, Gareth Bale and if I've forgotten anyone I apologise for that. It is a different situation because we have attacking players.”
