Juventus have apologised after a tweet containing a racist gesture was published on the official Twitter feed of their women's team.

The tweet, which featured a player making an offensive gesture with her face, received thousands of complaints in the 20 minutes it remained on the club's platform before being deleted.

After it was deleted, Juventus posted a short statement on Twitter: "We sincerely apologise that our tweet, which was not meant to cause controversy or have any racial undertones, may have offended anyone.

"Juventus has always been against racism and discrimination. #DifferencesMakeTheDifference."

The image, taken during a Juventus training session in Barcelona, caused outrage on social media.

One supporter wrote: "Sorry Juventus, You don’t get away that easily To make a difference, you have to act differently #ThisWasRacist."

Someone else said: "not going to spread the photo but what in the actual f*** is Juventus thinking. truly disgusting that anyone would think that taking that photo is okay, much less tweeting it??"

"Can't recall seeing something so heavily ratio'd in real time like this Juventus Women's tweet. Disgusting stuff," was another fan's view.

Another Twitter user commented: "if juventus has always been against racism, why did you tweet something that was, literally, racist?"

A fifth person added: "Juventus Women admin with the least sincere apology and most baffling post of the evening."

Juventus are in Catalonia to take on Barcelona in Sunday's Joan Gamper Trophy, which will include a women's match for the very first time.

The women's team was founded in 2017 and has gone on to enjoy instant success, winning the league title four times, as well as the Coppa Italia on one occasion.

Even so, they will have their work cut out against a Barcelona side who are considered among the best in the world.

Lluis Cortes' side showed their ability to devastating effect in last season's Champions League final, defeating Chelsea 4-0 to claim a maiden success in the competition.
