Juventus score incredible no-look own goal as they’re humbled by Serie A minnows

Juventus were beaten 4-2 by Sassuolo in Serie A with defender Federico Gatti scoring the most embarrassing own goal to compounded Juve’s miserable evening.

The Old Lady suffered their first defeat of the season on a Saturday evening to forget. Juve fell behind after 12 minutes before they drew level after Matias Vina put through his own net for the host. But a Domenico Berardi goal minutes before half-time saw Massimiliano Allegri’s side head into the break a goal down.

Federico Cheisa scored Juventus’ second equaliser of the game in the 78th minute but the Old Lady where unable to hold on again, conceding in the 82nd minute when Andrea Pinamonti put Sassuolo back in front for the third time in the game.

And Juventus’ torrid afternoon was rounded off after Gatti played a blind back pass towards his own goal, believing former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to be in front of his goal and ready to receive the pass.

But to make Gatti’s pass inexcusable, was that Szczesny had played the pass to the defender from the other side of the pitch in an attempt to get Juve on the front foot with two minutes of added time left. Gatti hurriedly played the ball backwards under pressure but his team-mates were left perplexed and furious as they could only stand and watch as the ball trickled into the open goal, dashing any hope of a comeback.

Gatti’s howler left no time for Juventus to respond, with the defeat seeing a five point gap between the Bianconeri and early pace setters Inter Milan, who have five wins from five games after following up their 5-1 hammering of AC Milan in the derby by winning 1-0 away at Empoli.

Juventus, unlike their title rivals, didn’t play in midweek after they were banned from the Conference League by UEFA due to breaching Financial Fair Play rules. But Allegri’s side were unable to make the midweek break count and now find themselves chasing the Milan sides at the top of the table already.
