Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reportedly has no plans to move Trent Alexander-Arnold into midfield despite Reds icon Jamie Carragher being ‘convinced’ that the move will eventually happen. Carragher wrote last week that the maligned England defender is the closest player Klopp has to Kevin De Bruyne or Steven Gerrard.

Alexander-Arnold spent most of his academy career in midfield but was moved to right-back when he first stepped into the first team in 2016. However, the 24-year-old has recently faced criticism for his performances.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Alexander-Arnold will one day end up back in midfield. That is despite Klopp criticising Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate for using the player in a central role in 2021.

However, per The Athletic, Liverpool apparently have no plans to use the academy graduate as a midfielder. There is a feeling at the club that the team’s lack of dominance in matches has led to Alexander-Arnold needing to do more defending.

That has seen opponents expose the space behind the full-back and Alexander-Arnold, usually a king of assists, has managed just two in the Premier League this season because his defensive duties have taken priority.

That led to Carragher insisting that Alexander-Arnold will one day move back into midfield. The Sky Sports pundit expects the move to happen towards the end of the star’s career.

“I have no idea if Alexander-Arnold has ambitions to go back to where he started and play in midfield, Gareth Southgate tried it and was criticised in some quarters, including by Klopp,” Carragher wrote in the Telegraph.

“To me, the move was understandable to try to get the most out of Alexander-Arnold in an England team with a completely different profile and mindset. In terms of his passing range, Alexander-Arnold is as good as anyone in Europe and the closest Liverpool have to Kevin De Bruyne or Steven Gerrard.

“Given how desperate Liverpool are for a creative midfielder, would turning him into a No 8 so he can fill those areas to whip those extraordinary passes into the penalty area be such a radical move?

“With Stefan Bajcetic out for the season, would Klopp even consider it as an immediate measure? I am convinced Alexander-Arnold will return to midfield eventually, whether it is in his late twenties or early thirties.”

It seems that Liverpool will persist with Alexander-Arnold at right-back. However, with fresh faces needed in midfield, moving him into the middle of the park remains an option for Klopp.
