Jurgen Klopp reacts to Liverpool finishing third & provides big Henderson update
Jurgen Klopp says he ‘cannot believe’ Liverpool have managed to secure a third-place finish in the Premier League, overcoming an injury-hit campaign to secure Champions League football.
The Reds went into the final day of the season needing to beat Crystal Palace and did so in comfortable fashion, with Sadio Mane grabbing a brace in a fairly routine 2-0 victory.
But elsewhere their top-four rivals, Chelsea and Leicester City, both slipped up, surprisingly losing to Aston Villa and Tottenham respectively.
The result means Liverpool finished the season on 69 points, behind only the Manchester clubs, and Klopp was full of praise for his players for getting over the line against the odds.
‘Outstanding, the best I could’ve dreamt of – we wanted this feeling, this game, this atmosphere,’ Klopp told BBC Radio 5 Live after the victory at Anfield.
‘Finishing the season in third is incredible, I can’t believe it – credit to the boys I can’t believe how it worked out in the last few weeks, incredible.
‘Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips are both cut up and stitched, Rhys hasn’t trained for three days, Gini Wijnaldum leaving the club and we all love him to bits.
‘We will miss him so much, with football it’s normal that people leave, but I will miss him so much.’
Jordan Henderson was on the bench for the game and has returned to full training after not playing since February with a groin problem, but the Liverpool skipper is on track to play at the Euros this summer.
On Henderson’s likely availability for England, Klopp said: ‘He will be fine, I don’t know if he will be in the squad but he is fine, he trained the last two days with us, he is fine.
‘He can return to training as normal – he will be one of the few players in the squad who are fresh which is good news.’
