Jurgen Klopp issues warning to Liverpool fans over £37m Luis Diaz signing

Jurgen Klopp admits he does not expect Luis Diaz to make an instant impact at Liverpool following his move from Porto.

Liverpool completed the signing of the Colombia international for an initial £37 million fee in the final week of the transfer window.

Tottenham had also submitted an offer to sign Diaz, which prompted Liverpool to move quickly for the 25-year-old.

Diaz has been in superb form for Porto this season with 16 goals and six assists in all competitions, but Klopp has urged Liverpool supporters to be patient.

‘Luis… let me say it like this, if he would now come, step on the pitch and would immediately be at his absolute best and playing better than all of the others that would be really strange because we’ve worked together for a while,’ Klopp said on Friday.

‘So he needs time, of course he adapts to it, but that doesn’t mean I don’t speak about four or five months or whatever, he needs time. I haven’t even seen him yet at the training ground so maybe we should wait a bit.

‘We are really happy and excited about the signing. I think it’s a really good sign that we work on all fronts to improve this team.

‘How it always is in football, we have to be successful now and in the future and so he can help with both, so that’s a really good thing.’

Klopp also believes Diaz has all the qualities to be a hit at Anfield.

‘We signed him because we like pretty much everything about him, so that’s how it is,’ said the Liverpool manager.

‘I’ve followed him for a while, not only since we played them twice in the Champions League.

‘He’s an exceptional player, he has the speed, he has the skillset, he has the character to have a really good career.

‘We all want him to have this career with us, that’s it.

‘I’m not sure but nowadays when you have 16, 17-year-old boys playing at the highest level and he’s maybe a little bit of a late bloomer but they bloom exceptionally well.

‘I’m really happy we could get him in now, we can help him and he can help us.

‘The story so far is a special one for sure. There are some players with special stories behind them who are like that. He’s one of us. We can’t wait to welcome him here and start working together.’
