The Reds missed out on the signing of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid this summer, walking away from the deal after baulking at the finances involved.

Liverpool’s midfield rebuild has stalled in recent weeks following the departures of Fabinho and club captain Jordan Henderson.

Three bids for Southampton’s Romeo Lavia had left disgruntled fans frustrate by a lack of progress but Liverpool now look set to smash the British transfer record for player who had seemed destined for Chelsea.

The Blues are understood to remain keen to make one final attempt to land a player they have had their eye on since January and Klopp maintains there could still be a late twist in the long-running saga.

‘I got told that I can confirm the deal with the club is agreed whatever that means. In the end we want the player and not any kind of agreement. We will see what happens.

‘What changed? We are a club that has not got endless resources. A couple of things happened that we did not expect, Hendo, Fab, things we did not think about before the summer and when it happened we gave it a go and the club was really stretched.

‘I told you now what I know but don’t praise the day before the night. Let’s see what happens and we go from there.’

Asked if the 21-year-old was due to undergo a medical today, Klopp added: ‘I don’t know.’
