Jurgen Klopp issues 'really promising' Virgil van Dijk injury update
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says Virgil can Dijk’s recovery from a serious knee injury is ‘really promising’ and there is still a possibility the defender could play again this season.
The Dutchman has been out of action since October when he suffered an ACL injury in the Merseyside derby against Everton.
The 29-year-old is going to miss months of action thanks to the tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, but it has never been clear exactly how long he is going to be out for.
While it remains certain that the centre-back will miss the majority of the current season, there is still hope he could play before the end of the campaign as his recovery is going as well as could be expected.
‘I don’t know what is possible and what is not possible; I don’t think I’m the right person to judge that 100 per cent,’ Klopp said in the press conference ahead of Thursday’s clash with Burnley.
‘He looks really good. I spoke to him this morning, I had him on the phone – he is in a really good mood. So it’s all very promising. But I don’t know when he will be back.
‘There are for sure a lot of stages still to go over or pass or whatever. That’s clear. I had this injury myself.
‘But for the time we are in and for how long he is out now, how long the rehabilitation is going on, he looks really, really promising. But that’s all.’
Former Reds defender Dejan Lovren posted a picture with Van Dijk on Sunday, also issuing a positive update.
‘It was nice to see my former teammate Virgil van Dijk today,’ the Croatian wrote. ‘A tough injury he had, but he looks stronger than ever, soon brother you will be top of your level again.’
