Jurgen Klopp expects Liverpool to ‘show class’ in January transfer hint
Jurgen Klopp is hoping that Liverpool will ‘show their class’ when it comes to making a decision over the future of Joel Matip, who is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season. The 32-year-old sustained a long-term knee injury during the win over Sheffield United in midweek and looks set to miss the rest of the campaign as a result.
Matip will also be out of contract in the summer, with his injury raising questions over whether he might have already played his final game in a Liverpool shirt. It has been reported that a move for Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix could be on the cards in January, but Klopp was quick to downplay the idea of replacing Matip when quizzed on his future in Friday’s press conference.
“I’m pretty sure the club will show their class,” said the Liverpool boss. “We have to make a decision with Joel with how things look after that [his injury]. I would say so [that he deserves a new contract] but it’s not my decision.”
Klopp was then asked if he would be looking to sign a new central defender next month and replied: “Is it now perfect? As long as we can go with those four [centre-backs]. If not, then it will be a bit more tricky with the amount of games coming up.
“It was never wonderland when you bring a world-class centre-back until the other one is fit again. As long as other clubs don’t put them under the Christmas tree for us and say: ‘Take it and use it for as long as you need it’. I didn’t really think about it yet because it was only five days since we had that problem. I don’t think so, to be honest.”
