Jurgen Klopp comments hint Liverpool could replicate Arsenal transfer mistake

Liverpool: Klopp opens up on who makes transfer decisions

Jurgen Klopp has all but confirmed that Liverpool won’t dip into the transfer market before the end of January. The Reds are in the midst of their worst run under the German, having not won in their last five league games.

The 1-0 defeat to Burnley last time out, also ended their long unbeaten record at Anfield, one that had stood since 2017.

The Reds have also scored just once in that stretch of games, with serious question marks being asked of Klopp’s fabled front three.

But in terms of transfers, it is at the back where the clear need for reinforcements can be found.

Going into the season, Jamie Carragehr felt his old club should sign a centre-back to replace the departing Dejan Lovren.

Klopp opted not to at that point, but little was he to know about the injury crisis that was set to strike his side.

First choice pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both suffered serious injuries, while Joel Matip has also struggled for fitness.

Despite those issues, Klopp has admitted that it is unlikely he will sign a defender, despite holding talks with club bosses.

He said: “Most of the time in my life I didn’t get what I wanted, so pretty much used to that. We talk about a centre-half, and yes, it would help 100 percent.

“We discuss the situation pretty much on a daily basis, and I make recommendations.

“But I cannot spend the money. I don’t make these decisions. There are people who are responsible for the whole thing, and I cannot make their decisions.

“When I say this, I know of course what we would do in an ideal world, but the world is not ideal. So we have to deal with the situation.”

A quiet month is likely toonly  further concerns that Liverpool’s first title defence since the 1990/91 season will not end well.

After storming to the Premier League crown last season, there was a hope that the Reds could be set for a long period of dominance.

But after their latest defeat, they sit six points behind league leaders Manchester United with a tricky run of fixtures to come.

Klopp is hoping to become just the fourth manager to retain the title after Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

Of those that haven’t, Arsene Wenger was the man to have won the most, without ever going back to back.

And Liverpool’s attempt is beginning to look eerily similar to Wenger’s Arsenal after going unbeaten in 2003/04.

Similarly to Liverpool’s summer, the Gunners attempted to keep the nucleus of the squad together, whilst making very slight changes.

The Liverpool boss sanctioned moves for Kostas Tsimikas, Diogo Jota and Thiago Alcantara in the summer, with all three suffering their own injury issues.

Wenger also made just a trio of a signings, before eventually relinquishing their title to Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

On the whole, it appears that the champions are in danger of standing still. Klopp recognises the need for improvements this month and it may be pivotal to their hopes of another trophy.
