Jurgen Klopp blames Covid-19 on Liverpool not funding centre-back signing
Jurgen Klopp admits Covid cash concerns are hurting his hopes of signing a centre-back in the January transfer window.
But the Liverpool boss insists the Reds will “fight against the world” to ensure their central defensive injury crisis doesn't derail their Premier League and Champions League ambitions.
The Reds are without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for months while Joel Matip is battling to be fit for next week's clash with Manchester United at Anfield.
Klopp turned to midfield duo Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to be his centre-back pairing for Monday's 1-0 defeat by Southampton which left them without a win in three games.
But he insisted they can't splash the cash on a new central defender because of the hit the club has taken due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Kop boss said: “We cannot sort it now in the transfer market.
“The club tries what it can but if they can't then we have to do what we did so far, get stronger as a group, stick more together and fight against the world, if you want.
“Fight against the circumstances. Strike back with all you have and make it the most special season ever of it.”
Liverpool are still top of the league although they could be overtaken by United next week if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men win their game in hand over Burnley.
But Klopp insists he isn't worrying about not being able to sign a centre-back in the window.
He added: “It's nothing to do with worrying, these are the facts. You cannot change that, so why would I worry about that now? That is for other people.
“If the world was in a completely normal place and we have this situation, you could be sure we would try everything to do the right stuff now.
“But the world is not in a normal place.”
