Jurgen Klopp admits he was wrong to criticise £100million signings seven years ago – with Liverpool set to break the British transfer record to buy Brighton’s Moises Caicedo after a fee of £111m was agreed overnight.

The Liverpool boss confirmed a deal was agreed between the two clubs, though any agreement with the player is yet to be struck.

And he has now backtracked on comments made after Paul Pogba’s big-money move to Manchester United, where he said in 2016: ‘The day that this is football, I’m not in a job anymore, because the game is about playing together.’

But with Liverpool ready to splash big on Ecuadorian midfielder Caicedo, Klopp said this morning: ‘Everything changes. Do I like it? No. But did I realise I was wrong? Definitely. It is not great but it is the way it goes.

‘It will not change around again. Saudi Arabia will not help. We as a club have to try and make sure with our resources we get the best possible team together. We really try everything to bring together the best team or squad for us.

Jurgen Klopp has backtracked on his comments that criticised £100m transfer fees

Liverpool have agreed a £111m fee – a British transfer record – for Brighton star Moises Caicedo

‘That is the idea and we are not in dreamland and it is not we can just point at players and bring them in. There is a lot of work to do. Sometimes one door closes and the other opens up. If people want to throw up my quotes from five or six years ago, I have no problem.’

Reports on Friday suggested Caicedo, who wanted to join Chelsea before Liverpool entered the race, was having second thoughts over a move to Anfield.

Asked on Caicedo specifically and what has changed financially since not brokering a deal to sign Jude Bellingham, Klopp added: ‘I can confirm the deal that the club has agreed, I don’t know what it means exactly, the player and agreement we will see. What changes (from earlier in the summer) is we did not have endless resources.

‘We didn’t expect a couple of things to happen, (Jordan) Hendo, Fab (Fabinho) and then it happened and we gave it a go and the club was really stretched. We will see in the end. I have told you what I know. Don’t praise the day before the night. Let’s see what happens.’

Klopp also said that he enjoyed pre-season and that Liverpool look sharp going into the new campaign. ‘I love the pre-season,’ he said. ‘We worked hard. I enjoyed it a lot. It was really good.

‘The boys were open, eyes open, ears open, listening. We did a lot not only on the pitch but in meetings as well. We wanted to learn our game not again but wanted to make sure we go to the next level together.

‘Now we all saw it, there were moments in pre-season where we were too open (defensively). The individual quality is extremely high so it is my job to organise it better, help the boys better/

‘The sessions I saw, the desire, the concentration, the readiness, the openness… just that I saw a lot of things where my thought was that they mean business, let’s give it a go.’
