Jesse Marsch has admitted he would be interested in replacing Julian Nagelsmann at RB Leipzig, should he leave the Bundesliga side this summer. The German has been touted as a potential replacement for Jose Mourinho, who was given the boot by Tottenham earlier this week.

Mourinho was replaced by Ryan Mason on an interim basis and will remain in charge for the remainder of the current campaign.

Chairman Daniel Levy has plenty of time to conduct a thorough search for their next boss, with Nagelsmann believed to be on their radar.

The 33-year-old has built a reputation as one of the best young coaches in European football after his exploits with Leipzig.

Ironically, Nagelsmann’s nickname is ‘Mini Mourinho’ after a coach likened his style to the man he could potentially replace in north London.

Asked for the roots behind the name, in 2015 he explained: “Well, Tim Wiese once gave me that name. I think there is a big difference [between us] and I don’t know Jose Mourinho in person.

“The elder players were very open with me. I am used to having an open relationship with everybody. I am no dictator. I don’t fear a lack of respect from the elder players.”

Should he leave Leipzig, it would of course open a vacancy at the the Red Bull Arena and Marsch has hinted he could be up for the job.

Marrsch is currently managing Leipzig’s sister team RB Salzburg and has guided them to two Austrian titls in as many seasons.

He had previously worked as an assistant for the German team during Ralf Rangnick’s tenure at the club and recently suggested he could be open to return.

“Of course I understand the club very well. If you ask me what would fit best, RB Leipzig is of course a top idea,” Marsch told Sky.

“But Julian Nagelsmann is doing a great job and there is currently no reason for Leipzig to look for a new coach. But if I can have the opportunity as a coach in Leipzig, then that’s a great idea for me.”

If Tottenham are to land Nagelsmann however, they will need to fend off interest from European champions Bayern Munich.

Hansi Flick has recently announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season, with the belief that he will become the new German national team manager.

And Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus claimed talks are already underway and that he will end up at the Allianz.

“My opinion is: Flick to the DFB, Nagelsmann to Bayern and Jesse Marsch to Leipzig,” Matthaus said last week.

“Of course, Bayern didn’t speak to Julian Nagelsmann directly, but started the conversation with Julian Nagelsmann’s side and I’m still standing by that today.

“I am convinced that Julian Nagelsmann will succeed Hansi Flick. He wants to take the next step.”

However, according to Nagelsmann himself, there have been no discussions and until that happens, he is remaining coy on links.

“There are and were no discussions and no offer,” he said. That’s why I don’t know what Bayern’s wish is. I have said I don’t want to start a war with my employers – that’s still the case.”
