Julian Alvarez is set to double his wages to around £100,000 a week by signing a new long-term contract at Manchester City.
City have moved to add a further year to the World Cup winner’s deal and tie him down until 2028.
The extension comes just months after Alvarez moved to the Etihad Stadium and his stock rose significantly while starring for Argentina in Qatar earlier this season.
The 23-year-old has largely acted as an understudy to Erling Haaland, with the pair starting together on six occasions.
City have scored 20 goals in those matches and Alvarez, a popular member of the dressing room, has had an impact during his debut campaign.

Pep Guardiola has been impressed by Alvarez, who is now set to earn £100,000-a-week
The Premier League champions paid River Plate £14million for the striker in January last year before loaning him back for the remainder of the season. His blistering goalscoring form in the months after persuaded Pep Guardiola that Alvarez could benefit City this term.
Alvarez’s terms were in the region of £50,000 a week and City have sought to offer him a sizeable increase in the hope of deterring any potential suitors in the summer.
Haaland, however, continues to take the headlines after plundering five goals in the 7-0 rout of RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
The Norwegian has overtaken Tommy Johnson’s 94-year club record of the most goals in a single season by netting his 39th on Tuesday night.
‘Erling is [always] in the right spot at the right time,’ John Stones said. ‘I think Jack [Grealish] was calling him an “absolute ball magnet” in the dressing room.
Erling Haaland admitted that City signed him in an attempt to win the Champions League
‘I believe he really could do what he wants, just from his hunger and his attitude and his professionalism. I get to see it first hand on the pitch and big players turn up on big occasions.
‘The players that we always bring in are incredible and that’s credit to the guys up top. The characters, how they fit in straight away, it’s not an easy place to fit in with how we train.’
Haaland admitted that City had brought him in to finally get the club over the line in Europe after years of near misses – including losing the 2021 final against Chelsea.
‘They’ve won four out of the last five Premier League titles,’ he said. ‘They didn’t bring me in to win the Premier League because they already know how to win it. So, you can read between the lines.’
