World Cup winner Julian Alvarez has doubled his wages by inking a long-term contract with Manchester City, taking his deal through until 2028.
The 23-year-old forward joined City from Argentine side River Plate last summer after originally being bought in the 2022 January transfer window.
In his debut season for City, Alvarez has scored 10 times in 33 appearances, and found the back of the net four times doing Argentina’s successful World Cup campaign in Qatar in December, which has seen City move to tie him down.
As revealed by Sportsmail on Wednesday, Alvarez has been rewarded with a new deal that will take his wages to around £100,000 a week. His terms were in the region of £50,000 a week and City want to deter any potential suitors.
Alvarez’s initial contract was due to expire in 2027, but early showings of his promise have convinced the club to ensure his long-term future with an additional 12-month extension.

‘I have been really pleased with my first season here, but I have plenty more I can do.
‘I know I can be better, and City offer me everything I need to fulfil my potential.
‘I want to thank the manager, the coaches and everyone at City who works behind the scenes for everything they have done for me since I joined in the summer.
‘I am now focused on getting better and helping City win trophies.’

City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain praised Alvarez’s attitude since his arrival, as well as his ‘special talent’.
‘He is the ideal blueprint for a young footballer and an inspiration to anyone looking to make their way in the game,’ Begiristain stated.
‘He has shown already here in England that he has outstanding movement and natural goalscoring instincts.’
Begiristain added: ‘We saw at the World Cup what a special talent he is. To win that trophy at his age is amazing and we are all very proud of what he achieved. His progress so far has been really good, but we are now fully focused on developing his game even further and turning him into one of the best strikers in world football.’
