Jude Bellingham should stick to speaking about himself rather than defending his England team-mate Jordan Henderson, claims Simon Jordan. The ex-Crystal Palace chairman has given his own defence of Henderson after his goal in Sunday’s World Cup win over Senegal.

England beat Senegal 3-0 in the round of 16 clash. Gareth Southgate’s side struggled in the opening half hour or so but Henderson popped up with the vital opener in the 38th minute.

The Liverpool skipper has now started back-to-back matches at the tournament in Qatar. His position in the team has been questioned by some sections of the media and from England fans.

But Bellingham made a point of calling out Henderson’s critics after Sunday’s match. He told ITV: “Brilliant performance today. I’ve seen some of the rubbish written about him playing and it’s ridiculous.

“He’s so underrated, technically. And he’s delivered again in a big game with a massive goal. So I think it’s time he gets a bit of respect.”

But Jordan says the 19-year-old should instead focus on his own game and not feel he should have to leap to his team-mate’s defence. Jordan does admit people are wrong to be so against Henderson’s inclusion and has highlighted his importance to any team he plays in.

He said on talkSPORT: “He [Bellingham] is 19 years of age, I’d prefer him to speak about his own game and focus on what he is doing. If there’s a feeling that they need to defend Jordan Henderson… I think Jordan Henderson performs a certain function.

“We will see when you’re up against a better midfield and when there are more requirements for England to do a different type of job whether Jordan Henderson can fit that bill. But Jordan Henderson is certainly a decent player and some of the ‘ABH’ stuff, ‘Anybody But Henderson’ type mentality that was going through some of the media, was probably wrong.

“But I still think if you are looking for a creative midfield and you’re looking for a team that is going to dominate the midfield, Jordan Henderson may come up a bit short. But in the game against Senegal he was a worthy component part of a decent England performance after 35 minutes.”

Both Henderson and Bellingham could start England’s quarter-final against France on Saturday. It will be the first-ever knockout meeting between the two nations at a major tournament.
