Jota misses absolute sitter as Jamie Carragher says ‘even I’d have scored that’

Jamie Carragher claimed he even could have scored for Liverpool on Saturday evening as Diogo Jota fluffed his lines against Newcastle.

With the Reds cruising to a 2-0 victory, Jota found himself unmarked in the Newcastle box in stoppage time. However, the Portuguese attacker, who had been introduced by Jurgen Klopp in the second half, nodded wide – prompting Carragher to make the claim.

Carragher, who was on co-commentary for Sky Sports, claimed that he would have headed the ball home. Jota is yet to find the net so far this season – with the Portuguese star struggling for fitness with a myriad of injuries.

Jota has made just six appearances in the English top flight so far this season – registering just one assist, against Arsenal in October.

The 26-year-old's latest setback came in October, when he suffered a calf injury that caused him to miss the World Cup. Jota returned from that injury last Monday, when he came on as a substitute in the Merseyside derby.

Jota has only completed the full 90 minutes once this season – during the Reds' win over Manchester City.

The Reds have now recorded two wins on the bounce, and Klopp's side have moved up to eighth in the Premier League. Liverpool could still sneak into the Champions League spots, and a win in their game in hand would see the Reds move within three points off fourth place.

The Kop outfit now face a daunting home Champions League tie against Real Madrid in midweek before travelling to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.

It's then Wolves at home for the Reds ahead of a crunch tie against old rivals Manchester United, who may still have designs on the Premier League title.
