Jose Mourinho to PSG ‘110% done’ – but depends on Roma’s Europa League final

'The Special One' could be poised for a special summer amid rumours Jose Mourinho may be set to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

The Parc des Princes carousel looks as though it may be sparked into life once more, with Christophe Galtier possibly heading for the exit despite leading PSG to another Ligue 1 title. And Mourinho could be just the man to try his hand in the French capital – but it could come down to whether Roma are crowned Europa League champions.

That's according to television producer and presenter Dougie Critchley, who has forecast another change of scenery could be on the cards if Roma beat Sevilla in Wednesday's final. The Portuguese takes on the competition's all-time title record-holders looking to extend his own perfect record in European finals.

"I think he'd probably be keen to [join PSG if the position opens]," Critchley said during an appearance on Sky Sports News. "He hasn't hidden the fact that he is a little bit unhappy with the situation at Roma.

"He's been financially impeded in his view, and it's been a really 'backs-against-the-wall' [mentality] – in his eyes, I mean, it always is with Jose."

The move to Paris is picking up pace in Portuguese media, with reports backing up claims that a win on Wednesday would heavily influence matters. UOL Esporte claim if Roma win the trophy, there would be a '110%' chance that he would join PSG. If he loses it, there's said to be an 80% chance it will happen.

The Special One took Roma to the inaugural Europa Conference League crown in 2022 and can make it back-to-back continental titles in Budapest. PSG, meanwhile, are licking their wounds after being kicked out of both the Champions League and Coupe de France in the last-16.

Mourinho, 60, won a Champions League trophy with Inter Milan in 2010 and returned to Italy after an underwhelming 17 months in charge of Tottenham.

"He's excelled at pretty much every club he's been at," continued Critchley. "Probably except for that Spurs spell. And to win a Conference League title with Roma – their first trophy in 14 years – to get to a Europa League final this year, and if [Roma] can get it over the line, I think he can walk away with his head held high if he does want to leave.

"And PSG, with Christophe Galtier's job pretty uncertain, they'll be looking at a manager with a certain European calibre, which they haven't had for quite a while, probably since the days of [Carlo] Ancelotti. And Mourinho would think that he'd be able to get them over the line and that elusive Champions League title."

The move makes sense if European success is PSG's focal point, with the runner-up finish of 2020 still the club's only European final since Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) took over the club in June 2011. Even the recruitment of Lionel Messi hasn't worked out as desired, with the Argentinian poised to leave the club this summer.

The Giallorossi may have something to say about letting their chief strategist leave Roma prematurely, particularly given the success he's brought in his two terms at the helm. The pulling power of Paris may be too alluring to resist, however, should PSG make it known The Special One is their target of choice.
