Jose Mourinho takes swipe at Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes with Harry Kane comment

Tottenham: Mourinho slams players for COVID breach

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho appears to have taken a swipe at Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes and his penalty record. Fernandes has scored six of the seven penalties he has taken this season in the Premier League and Champions League. Only Leicester have been awarded more spot kicks in the English top flight than United this term.

Fernandes is United’s leading scorer in the league with 11 goals to his name.

But five of those have been from the penalty spot, including the winner in the 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Friday.

Tottenham were awarded a penalty of their own in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Leeds United.

Harry Kane opened the scoring from 12 yards on a comfortable afternoon for Mourinho’s side.

And speaking after the match, the former United boss appeared to direct a small dig at Fernandes.

“Some players score ten goals a season on penalties,” Mourinho said.

“I’m not speaking about Harry Kane by the way.”

Kane’s penalty was his third in the league this season and fifth in all competitions.

Tottenham’s win over Leeds propelled them up to third in the Premier League table.

Kane was once again provider for Heung-min Son for Spurs’ second goal.

But Mourinho wants more of his other players to contribute to the scoresheet.

“They are very good players as you know for many years,” Mourinho said.

“They play together of course for many years too. That together, plus the way we want them to interact, brings goals.

“I want more goals, especially from other players but today the second goal is great, is also great because it was something we spoke about against a team that defends the way Leeds does.”

Meanwhile, Mourinho has condemned Sergio Reguilon, Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso who were all caught flouting coronavirus regulations over the Christmas period.

The trio all sat out of the match against Leeds.

Mourinho said: “Of course we’re not happy. It was a negative surprise for us.

“I prefer to say disappointed. We know what we are internally. We don’t need to open the door to you and let you know what is going on internally, what are going to be the consequences, how did we approach that negative surprise.

“I feel disappointed, just disappointed.”
