Jose Mourinho takes aim at nemesis Luke Shaw with "dramatically bad" criticism
Jose Mourinho has once again taken aim at Luke Shaw, this time for his ‘dramatically bad’ corners in England’s win over the Czech Republic on Tuesday evening.
Shaw has played both of England’s last two group stage games, impressing many with his driving runs and willingness to attack.
England may have won and secured top spot in the group, but one aspect of Shaw’s game came under particular scrutiny from his former boss.
Speaking to TalkSport, Mourinho said: “The negative thing I would say is once more they were very poor on attacking corners.
“The service was dramatically bad. They have so many good players to attack corners.
“The crosses are not passing the first man. Luke Shaw, in my opinion, very good tonight but very poor on the corner.
“England has great power at this level and going to knockouts, one corner can decide a game."
Shaw and Mourinho had a frosty relationship when the pair worked at Manchester United.
The left-back was managed by the Portuguese between 2016 and 2018 and suffered with several injury and form issues, often coming under criticism from Mourinho.
Shaw spoke to the BBC about that period earlier this month and explained his side of things.
"It was a very hard time, a couple years back, when I wasn't playing, wasn't even involved. I've always believed in myself.
Is Jose Mourinho's criticism of Luke Shaw fair? Let us know in the comments below.
“I think there were times when people were thinking maybe I could leave.
"But like I said, I always believed that one day, I'd be able to fight my way back and get into the team, and show people what my qualities are.
"I feel like I'm starting to do that now. But there's still much more to come, I think.
“And I'm still quite young, so I've still got time to improve."
Asked if the public criticism of his performances affected him: “It was very difficult,” Shaw said.
"I think, sometimes I wasn't able to get my word across.
A lot of people were behind me here, so I knew I had that sort of backing.
"But I just needed to keep quiet and put my head down.
"A lot of people were saying a lot of negative stuff about me.
“I just look back at it as a learning curve and something that's improved me as a person, off the pitch, not just on the pitch."
Shaw’s form has improved drastically since, and he was included in the PFA Team of the Year for his consistency this past season.
Having played in England’s last two matches, he is expected to start the next one against Germany as well.
