Jose Mourinho singles out Chelsea star for praise after Scotland vs England
Jose Mourinho claimed Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour was ‘the difference’ after Scotland left Wembley with a fully deserved point following a goalless draw against England in their Euro 2020 Group D clash.
Steve Clarke’s side kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages following a highly-creditable performance, during which they blunted England’s fabled attack and carved out the better chances over the 90 minutes.
Central to their composed display was the elegant and tenacious Gilmour ,who ran the show in central midfield on what was his first start for his country.
The 20-year-old was used sparingly by Thomas Tuchel during the second half of last season, but Mourinho is confident the Champions League holders have found an absolute gem.
He told talkSPORT: ‘The kid Gilmour was the difference, he was always showing, he wanted the ball under the pressure.
‘McGinn could be a bit higher and the two strikers worked so hard. The last action of the game is an example of their mentality.
‘Steve Clarke organised the game tactically very well, but more importantly than that was the spirit.
‘They didn’t come for a football match, it was clearly Steve and his staff’s job. They united the team and they were ready to fight.
‘They got home with this historical result, but the door is open to qualify. They play at home to Croatia and they can qualify still.
‘Credit to Scotland. If England arrives to that situation and they decide let’s take the pragmatic route, it was Scotland who put them in that position.’
