Jose Mourinho says Man Utd have dropped in expectation levels since he left club
Manchester United have dropped in expectation levels since the departure of Jose Mourinho and arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – according to the man himself.
The former Real Madrid, Inter, Chelsea and Tottenham boss has been speaking frankly about this former club in his role as a pundit before taking over at Roma – hitting out at current expectations.
As well as the League Cup and Europa League, Mourinho counts the Community Shield as a third trophy he won with the Red Devils in 2016/17, alongside a 6th place finish in the Premier League.
In a chat with James Cordon regarding his time at United, which came to an end in 2018, the 58-year-old still insists that he over performed with the squad he had to pick from.
In a dig at how he was viewed by the media, Mourinho said that expectations at the club have been lowered, with positives taken from their second-placed finish under Solskjaer – but not for himself.
Speaking with the Sun, Mourinho said: "Manchester United was a situation where we won three trophies in the first season. When I met you I wanted more."
Before adding: "I am very optimistic but I am very realistic. When we did that at Manchester United by winning the Europa League, and the domestic cup, I felt for the next step it would not be enough.
"This season, people were saying, 'Great season, you finished second.' I’d say, 'We finished second. It’s a bad season'."

Concluding: "I like Manchester United, the fans were amazing with me. And I think it is good for them that another season without trophies is seen as positive.
"But with me the level of expectation coming from the media is completely different."
Following their agonising defeat to Villarreal on penalties, Solskjaer admitted that the season as a whole had not been a successful one.
Speaking to BT Sport, he added: "We need to get better, simple as.
"We've done really well this season coming through. The start was difficult. We had no pre-season and lost three of the first six.
"We pushed in the league, maybe got closer to the top than we thought and we got to a final. But you need to win the finals to make it a good season."
