Roma boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that Alexis Sanchez ‘wasn’t well’ when he was playing for Manchester United. Mourinho signed the forward during his time in charge at Old Trafford, but the Chile international was a huge flop in the north west and was eventually shipped off to Inter Milan.

On Tuesday night, the duo were reunited when Inter hosted Roma in the Coppa Italia.

Sanchez starred for the Serie A champions as they defeated Mourinho’s side 2-0 to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.

The 33-year-old bagged the second goal of the night with just over 20 minutes remaining to secure the victory.

After the match, Mourinho was asked about his former player. And the 59-year-old offered an explanation as to why Sanchez underperformed at Old Trafford.

“I exchanged a few words with him before kick-off,” Mourinho said.

“In England he wasn’t well, while at Inter he is happy. He scored a great goal, which changed the course of the game.”

United signed Sanchez from Arsenal in January 2018, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving in the opposite direction.

The forward had enjoyed a sensational spell with the Gunners, where he had contributed an incredible 80 goals and 45 assists in 166 matches.

He had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City but eventually linked-up with Mourinho in the red half of the city, where he was handed huge wages.

And he looked a shadow of his former self with the Red Devils as he could only muster a measly five goals in 45 matches.

Mourinho began to lose faith in Sanchez at the start of the 2018/19 campaign and regularly benched the player.

And when the Portuguese boss was sacked less than a year after Sanchez had arrived at Old Trafford, the player’s days looked numbers.

Sanchez continued to be a bit-part player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and was later sent to Inter on loan.

The deal was eventually made permanent and Sanchez has gone on to contribute 17 goals and 22 assists during his time at the San Siro.

Last season he played 30 league games as Antonio Conte led Inter to the Serie A title for the first time in 11 years.

And he has played his part once again this time around as Inter top the table once again under new manager Simone Inzaghi.

Mourinho, meanwhile, has struggled to have the impact he would have wanted to since taking over in Rome.

His side are seventh in the Serie A table, although they have qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa Conference League.
