Jose Mourinho made Chelsea stars "hate" Liverpool and Man Utd says Joe Cole
Joe Cole has revealed that former boss Jose Mourinho turned a ‘nice’ Chelsea side into a ‘horrible’ one during his first stint with the club.
The ex-Blues winger played under Mourinho between 2004 and 2007, where the Portuguese manager cultivated an us-versus-them mentality in which Chelsea hated – and were hated by – other teams.
Mourinho formed one of the greatest Premier League sides ever during his tenure as he led them to back-to-back Premier League titles and an FA Cup, before being sacked due to a poor run of games in 2007.
Now pundit Cole has explained the way that Mourinho changed the culture at Stamford Bridge in order to be successful.
Speaking on Jamie Carragher's The Greatest Game podcast, Cole said: “We hated (Liverpool) and we hated Man United but that's what Jose made us. He made us horrible.
“Chelsea was a nice club before Jose, weren't it? We had a lovely players' bar, the lads would come and play us and have a nice night out in London.
“It was a nice football team, and he recognised that, Jose, and said ‘I want to make these the (most horrible) bunch to play against and everyone's going to hate me.’ The manager spiced it up and we obliged.”
Chelsea and Carragher’s Liverpool were two of England’s most dominant sides during the period, which led to several high-intensity match-ups in the mid-noughties.

Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez was equally tactical and conservative in his approach as the Spaniard often clashed heads with Mourinho, which Cole admits made for boring matches between the sides.
He added: “(Liverpool) were horrible play against, we were horrible to play against.
“They were c**p games though, Carra, weren't they? They must have been boring to watch because we were just cancelling each other out.
"The only person who would have enjoyed it was an Italian tactician.
“I bloody hated them, there was no space, stop-start, it was horrible. I don't remember enjoying the games."
