Jose Mourinho couldn’t help himself after England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy on Sunday, and aimed a thinly-veiled dig at Luke Shaw on Monday morning. England were beaten by Italy on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Mourinho has continued his verbal onslaught at Manchester United defender Shaw, choosing to take issue with the fact the left-back didn’t take a penalty against Italy on Sunday.

The Three Lions suffered heartbreak against Roberto Mancini’s side at Wembley after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes.

Harry Kane, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all stepped up to take spot-kicks, but only the former two scored.

And speaking to talkSPORT on Monday, former United boss Mourinho explained he wasn’t happy with the penalty takers.

Gareth Southgate chose to send on Rashford and Sancho in the dying minutes of extra time, with neither having any real involvement before making the long walk to the penalty spot.

Rashford replaced Kyle Walker and played 90 seconds at right-back, while Sancho was unable to get any meaningful touches of the ball during his brief stint further up the field.

Some England fans believed that having the two take penalties after they hadn’t got a kick during the match was a recipe for disaster, a view Mourinho echoed on talkSPORT.

“I don’t know, in this case, I really don’t know, but I think it doesn’t matter if you are a great penalty taker or not,” he said.

“In this situation, where was Sterling, where was Stones, where was Luke Shaw? And why Henderson or Walker didn’t stay on the pitch?

“In reality, it’s very, very hard for Rashford or Sancho to come and take a penalty after one touch on the ball.”

Arsenal youngster Saka stepped up to take England’s fifth penalty, knowing he had to score to keep his side in the shoot-out, only for Gianluigi Donnarumma to stop his effort.

And Mourinho believes the 19-year-old had too much pressure put on himself.

“For Saka to have the pressure of that penalty on his shoulders, I think it’s too much,” he said.

“We can speak about the previous days, they were amazing taking penalties, but the problem with the penalties, I think it’s one thing to take in penalty, another to take in a match.

“Some situations, there is no way to train them properly because you cannot train with the real pressure, the real pressure is something you only feel in that moment.

“Saka, I just feel very sorry for him and that’s it.”
