Jose Mourinho and three Roma stars sent off in 5-2 friendly defeat to Real Betis

Joes Mourinho’sRoma were involved in fiery friendly on Saturday which saw the manager and three of his players sent off.

The former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss ran onto the pitch in anger to protest a controversial goal by opponents Real Betis, in a game which eventually finished 5-2 to the Spanish side.

Unhappy with the complaints, over a suspected handball, the referee waved Mourinho away and produced a red card.

Lorenzo Pellegrini was also given his marching orders for the way he also contested the decision.

At that stage, the game was level at 2-2, with goals coming from Rodri and Nabil Fekir for Betis, and Eldor Shomurodov and Gianluca Mancini for Roma.

Just before the hour mark, things truly boiled over following Alex Moreno’s dubious goal, as he appeared to roll the ball over the line.

Things had fallen nicely for the fullback after Roger Ibanez blocked a ball onto his own cross bar.

Moreno slipped as he went to tap it in, so instead used a number of different body parts to get his goal, with Roma claiming one of those was his left arm.

Mourinho’s and Pellegrini’s dismissals started a chain reaction for the Italian side, who finished the match with eight men, as Mancini and Rich Karsdop were also sent off.

This allowed Cristian Tello and Rober to add their names to the scoresheet in the latter stages.

If this was only a friendly, it’s hard to imagine what will come when the season starts on 21 August.

How successful will Mourinho be with Roma? Let us know in the comments section.

Mourinho was announced as the new Roma manager back in May, taking over from Paulo Fonseca, who could only guide the club to a 7 th place finish last season.

The Portuguese coach is well thought of in Italy, having a Serie A win rate of 64.4% from his time with Inter, whom he also won one of his two Champions Leagues with, with the other coming with Porto.

Despite his recent tenures with Manchester United and Tottenham both ending on bad terms, there is still huge excitement around his appointment at the Stadio Olimpico.
