Jorginho 'very happy' with new Chelsea life under Thomas Tuchel

Jorginho ‘very happy’ with new lease of life in Chelsea first-team under Thomas Tuchel and says manager is doing things ‘the right way’ amid talk of the Italian leaving London

  • Jorginho has insisted he is ‘very happy’ at Chelsea under coach Thomas Tuchel
  • The midfielder continues to be linked to a move away from Stamford Bridge
  • But he has re-discovered his form since being a key player in Tuchel’s first team

Chelsea’s Jorginho has insisted he is ‘very happy’ at the club under Thomas Tuchel, who appears to have revived the playmaker’s career just as talk was growing of his exiting West London.

The much-maligned midfielder, who was the target of Chelsea fans’ ire when they were struggling under former manager Maurizio Sarri, has flourished since coming into the first team as part of Tuchel’s new system.

‘I’m very happy because the team is doing very well, working hard, trying to understand what the coach wants,’ Jorginho told Chelsea’s website.

The Italian was strongly linked with a move away from the Blues last summer, having fallen out of favour under previous manager Frank Lampard.

Speculation remains over Jorginho’s Chelsea future, with rumours of his being a make-weight in a swap deal for Christian Eriksen at Inter Milan.

For his part, Jorginho said he has fully bought into Tuchel’s tactical plan, with Chelsea unbeaten in eight games since the German took the helm.

‘I think it’s the right way to move forward,’ he said.

‘He understood the characteristics of the players and the way he wants to play is good for our characteristics.

‘So he understood that and he’s trying to give us the advice and the right way to work and then the results are coming.’

A key feature of Chelsea’s success under Tuchel is the development of a strong partnership in central midfield between Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic. The two have started all but one Premier League match together since Tuchel arrived.

‘I have a very good relationship with him (Kovacic) because we think the same way about football, we understand each other,’ Jorginho said.

‘We know what we want to do, what each other wants to do, so I find it quite easy playing with him because we think the same way.

‘We know who needs to be in that position in that moment so we leave space for each other in the right moment. We cover each other’s backs, we understand when we need to be close to each other and when we don’t.’

Jorginho praised Tuchel for understanding ‘the characteristics of the players’ at Chelsea

Looking ahead to Chelsea’s clash with Manchester United on Sunday, Jorginho said he is thrilled to be involved once more against the top sides.

‘Playing every game is very motivating, but when you have a big game like this it’s even more so. It will be a tough game, against a very hard opponent, it will not be easy,’ he said.

‘I think the best way is always to defend well because when you defend well and don’t concede, then you can create chances because of the qualities of the group. We need to keep defending very well and then try to score when we have a chance.’
