Jorginho "could win Ballon d’Or" as huge role in Chelsea team awaits this season
Chelsea star Jorginho could cap off what has been an excellent season for both club and country by winning Euro 2020 on Sunday.
Jorginho has already lifted the Champions League trophy this season, with his performances in the competition key to Chelsea's triumph and earning him a spot in UEFA's Champions League squad of the season.
The midfielder has also played a key role in Italy's run to the final of the Euros, starting every single game and sending them through to the final with an excellent winning penalty against Spain.
If Italy are able to beat England in the final at Wembley on Sunday, Jorginho is expected to be in the running for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award and former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes he "could win it".
Speaking to Paddy Power, Petit said: "I’ve been impressed with Jorginho this season, especially the second half of the season with Chelsea.
"I wasn't really convinced by him when he first came to England with Maurizio Sarri. He didn’t have the physical quality to do well in the Premier League, but he’s adapted well and tried to be a different player.
"He used to play on his quality, his technique and vision. Since Thomas Tuchel took over at Chelsea, he’s become better in every game.
"In terms of his consistency he needs to improve a bit more, and what I've seen at the end of the season, and with Italy, tells me he can do a lot more on the pitch. He can be a central figure for Chelsea.
"Could he win the Ballon d’Or? There are a few players who have also had a very good season, including some of England’s players, but he is one of the players who could win it."
Jorginho's former manager Maurizio Sarri and his international team-mate Lorenzo Insigne have both backed the midfielder to win the award, with Sarri saying: "If he wins the European Championship too, he will become one [of the favourites].
Who will win Euro 2020? Comment below
"He is a refined player, probably not understandable by everyone. You have to set your eyes on him and only watch him in the game.
"He is so good and intelligent that he makes everything seem easy, rarely anything spectacular remains in your eyes. This is his greatness."
Insigne said: "It is not up to me to say who should win it, but Jorginho would deserve it. It's correct that people are talking about him."
