Jordan Henderson says Liverpool’s players are “disappointed” despite thrashing Porto 5-1 away from home in the Champions League group stages on Tuesday night, because they conceded a goal despite a thoroughly dominant performance at the Estadio do Dragao.
The Reds are top of Group B, which also contains AC Milan and Atletico Madrid, with six points from six having scored eight goals in just two matches.
Mohamed Salah and substitute Roberto Firmino both helped themselves to braces here while Sadio Mane was also on the scoresheet as Liverpool got back to winning ways after a 3-3 draw with Brentford in the Premier League last weekend.
But Henderson insists Jurgen Klopp’s charges will still come away from their drubbing of the Portuguese Primeira Liga giants somewhat disappointed not to have kept a clean sheet.
Speaking to BT Sport post-match, Henderson said: “It’s definitely not job done, there’s another four games to play. It’s a very difficult group but we’ve had two very good performances against AC Milan and now Porto.
“We’ve applied ourselves very well, put on good performance and got results we deserved. It’s a good start but it is far from over.
“We’ll be disappointed to concede a goal. I thought we were dominant throughout the game, so we’ll be a little bit disappointed to concede.
“At the same time the overall performance was very good. We scored some brilliant goals and played good football so we have got to be pleased as it is a difficult place to come.”
On Curtis Jones, who grabbed four assists, Henderson added: “Curtis has been fantastic. I know on paper he is so young but I feel like he has been around the first team for a few years now.
“He has settled really well and matured really well. You’re starting to see what a good player he is over the last few weeks.
“He has had to be a little bit patient at the beginning of the season but has come in and done fantastically well. You can see he has all the attributes to be a top player.
“He’s maturing all the time and putting in some really good performances to help the team. Not only him tonight, the overall performance from the team was very good.”
Liverpool captain Henderson made his 400th appearance for the club in Portugal having joined a decade ago from Sunderland.
He reacted, wearing a wide smile: “I can’t really describe the feeling. I still get it every time I put the shirt on. I try to give my all for this club every single day.
“It’s an honour to put the shirt on and I don’t take it for granted. To do it 400 times so far is pretty special but I feel I’ve still got a lot left to contribute to this club and hopefully I can do it many more times in the future.”
BT Sport pundits and former Liverpool strikers Peter Crouch and Michael Owen were both also full of praise for 20-year-old midfielder Jones.
Crouch said of the Liverpool academy graduate: “Curtis Jones was very impressive tonight. He has excellent feet and was making driving runs at the right time.”
While Owen added: “Before Harvey Elliott got injured, he was the one with the shirt.
“Curtis Jones has always been around, here and there, but for his sake he needs a long run in the team. When he gets the chance he needs to do what he did tonight.”
Liverpool return to action against Premier League champions Manchester City, who were beaten 2-0 by Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain in France on Tuesday night.
The Reds go into that game having scored at least two goals in all of their past six matches, but could be without influential right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.
