John Terry’s hero growing up had him glued to TV – and it wasn’t a footballer

John Terry had an unlikely hero when he was growing up who had him glued to the TV – and it wasn't a footballer.

Terry, 42, had a stellar career as a defender at Chelsea where his abilities helped the Blues win five Premier League and FA Cup trophies, a Champions League and Europa League, three League Cups, and two Super Cups. But despite his defensive robustness, the stalwart surprisingly wasn't inspired by any footballers in his youth, and was in awe of snooker legend Stephen Hendry instead.

Terry made the admission on Hendry's YouTube show, where he revealed: "You were my hero growing up. Seeing you win trophy after trophy, year after year.

“I was 12 at the time but genuinely, when I saw you winning it was like ‘how did you stand [up] that mentality, what kind of motivates you?’ I was glued every year to the TV growing up and it stays with you."

And Hendry is still the England legend's idol to this day, apart from when they're enemies on the golf course. Terry went onto tell the seven-time World Champion: "You were my hero. Still are, except on the golf course!”

Would Terry do well as Chelsea manager? Let us know in the comments section

JT's picked up a penchant for golf since retiring from football as a player in 2018, and he's had more time to perfect his craft after leaving his post as Aston Villa's assistant manager in 2021. And he revealed he has cut his golf handicap to zero last year.

He said at the time: "When I retired I set myself a target to get down to scratch and today I achieved it. Not the most exciting post but one I'm personally pleased with.” And only a manager job with Chelsea would be able to tempt him away from the golf course.

Terry also declared to Hendry: "The only job I'd kind of come out of retirement for would be the Chelsea job. To be involved in some sort of capacity in a first-team role." However, the Blues won't come knocking for now after his former team-mate Frank Lampard was appointed as the club's interim boss on Thursday.
